Stories Lived

Duke Trujillo and His Fight Against Poverty

THIS is a story of one man making a HUGE difference on the streets of Lake Charles. Poverty is an issue. It affects one too many people not only in Southwest Louisiana, but throughout our country. However, Duke Douglas Trujillo goes out of his way to help out the homeless throughout Lake Charles, taking money out of his pocket to provide to those that need everyday necessities. Whether it’s a tube of toothpaste or a bottle of water, Duke and his mother go out of their way to help others. They don’t ask for recognition nor rewards. In fact they don’t ask for anything at all. All they want to do is fight the demon we call poverty and help those it haunts.

Duke frequently refers to a particular Will Smith quote when describing his passion to help others.  The quote is ‘If you’re not making someone else’s life better, then you’re wasting your time. Your life will become better by making other lives better.’

Duke’s personal mission is to help end poverty. It’s a tall task, but he’s already helped many who are considered homeless in Southwest Louisiana.
